Alicia Echavarria

Alicia Echavarria is a doctoral student in Screen Cultures from Harlem, New York. She seeks to explore notions of race and proprietorship through spirit possession tropes in U.S. and Dominican horror media. Her research interrogates how horror problematizes hegemonic Western categories of identity. She earned her BA in English with a concentration in Creative Writing and a minor in Cinema Studies from Bowdoin College, as well as her MA in Screen Cultures at Northwestern University. As a first-generation college student and Afrolatina, she aims to make media literacy accessible, and to platform Black, femme, and queer artists.
